Beads Throughout History.......
Ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians, Greeks and many others have been known to use semi precious stones for decoration and healing purposes. Archaeologists have found glass beads on the Southern & Eastern coast of Africa that were likely to have been imported from Egypt and Rome during the third Century AD.
Over the centuries beads have been created from shell, clay, stone, animal bones, metals, and natural seeds for ceremonial uses and self-ornamentation. Beads have been documented as being used in parts of Africa such as the Sudan during ten thousand BC. During the 15th century glass beads used in Africa were imported from Italy, Bohemia and the Netherlands.
During the 60’s hippies and followers of the love and freedom movement wore strings of beads to echo peace and the natural way of life that the continents of Africa, India and South East Asia offered in contrast to the growing commercialism of the West. The wearing of beads also symbolised the circle of life and the cycles of humanity and the cosmos.
