Toddlers

Colour can be used very effectively to stimulate intellectual development from toddler age onwards.
However toddlers can only take short bursts of time in ‘loud’ colourful environments, such as mother & toddler groups & play centres. Bright primary coloured environments can be beneficial for short periods of time, but not for full days. Strong colours will bombard their senses increasing hyperactivity, frustration and restlessness.

Store Away Brightly Coloured Toys
Keep the decor in their rooms a calming pastel backdrop to primary coloured toys, equipment and soft furnishings. In their bedrooms encourage the full spectrum of colours to be introduced via toys and equipment. Brightly coloured toys can then easily be moved or stored away to create a more restful atmosphere for quiet times.

Within the colour spectrum red, orange & yellow are considered 'magnetic' colours. They make a strong impact, are warm, energising & uplifting. Blue, indigo & violet are 'electrical' and are cool, soothing & calming. Green lies in the middle of the spectrum being neither warm nor cold it creates balance. We often retreat to the green of nature when we need space, calm & a sense of peace. Using green within decor will help to create a feeling of harmony & balance.

Soft Coral & Peach Tones
A great way to use colour in toddler’s rooms is on the ceiling, lying down the child will spend sometime before sleep looking upwards. Using a soft coral/peach/pink shade on the ceiling will create the feeling of a safe & secure space. Our first colour association is formed in the womb, where we are surrounded by warm nurturing tones created by the light permeating the mothers’ skin.

As within all colours there are many different shades that create different moods changing the atmosphere within a room. For specific advice on application of colour for your child, a full survey by a qualified colour consultant is recommended.
